Amicus member Louise Young is currently exhibiting eight small paintings on vellum at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. The exhibition features the work of six artists and is centered around a Garden design based on the ancient Welsh legend of 'Llyn Fan y Fach'.
The story of 'the lady from the lake' explains how the tradition of herbal medicine arose in the area of Myddfai in medieaval times and continued until the 19C.
Louise shows in her paintings some of the original 'cures' described in 'The Red Book of Hergest', one of the earliest Welsh manuscripts.
The exhibition is in the gallery at the wonderful Botanic Garden at Llanarthne near Carmarthen continues until 14th June. For opening times go to www.gardenofwales.org.uk

Sally Pond's delicate painting of Old Man's Beard (Clematis vitalba) got three special mentions at the recent SBA exhibition.
Sally was awarded a Certificate of Botanical Merit, Highly Commended for the Joyce Cuming Presentation Award, and an Honourable Mention for the Strathmore Award for Composition.'

'Recipe for Autumn' is one of the Louise Young's new paintings on vellum which will be exhibited in a solo show at MOMA Wales in Machynlleth throughout April and May.

The collection of 16 contemporary botanical paintings that Amicus Botanicus artists presented to the charity 'Gardening Leave' in 2014, will go on show in Glasgow at the beautiful Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed 'House for an Art Lover'.

Gaye Norman is exhibiting with the Buckinghamshire art society in their Autumn Exhibition at The Queens Park Arts Centre, Queens Park, Aylesbury, Bucks HP21 7RT.
The exhibition is on now from Weds 12th November until Sunday 16th November - entry free.
The exhibition will also feature work from local schools as part of the Young Artists Awards, an initiative to promote art in schools.

This collection of 16 beautiful paintings, painted by the members of Amicus Botanicus for Gardening Leave were handed over to Heather Budge-Reid, the CEO of Gardening Leave at the opening of our recent exhibition "The Art of Cultivating Hope" at Shepherd Market in Mayfair, London.
Over the coming months Gardening Leave are going to exhibit the paintings around the country. Each painting has a story which links it to the horticultural therapy work that Gardening Leave do with troubled veterans with mental health issues.
The collection has been shown in the stand of Inovar Garden Buildings, who are sponsors of Gardening Leave, at the Chelsea Flower Show. At the end of May the paintings can be seen on the Gardening Leave stand at "Gardening Scotland" at the Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh from May 30th - June 1st.

After having appeared at the Chelsea Flower show and at the Gardening Scotland Show, the collection of paintings given by Amicus Botanicus to 'Gardening Leave' are currently on show in the gallery of the National Botanic Garden of Wales near Carmarthen www.gardenofwales.org.uk.
Through the paintings and the accompanying text, the exhibition explains the important work that Gardening Leave do with ex-servicemen and women. The exhibition runs until 31st Oct. 2014.

The Art of Cultivating Hope

This beautiful 'Victoria Cross Poppy' painted by Jeanne Debons is one of the paintings on show at 54 The Gallery, Shepherds Market, Mayfair, London W1J 7QX from 12th - 18th May 2014.
In this centenary year of the First World War the fourteen artists have chosen to support Gardening Leave, a charity which tends to the invisible wounds of conflict by providing horticultural therapy for troubled Armed Forces veterans with mental health issues.
The artists have produced a collection of paintings of plants suggested by Gardening Leave, some of which held a special meaning for those fighting in the First world War, and others which are of special significance to Gardening Leave in their work. These 16 paintings which form a special section within the exhibition, can be seen here before they are presented to Gardening Leave for their use in helping to raise awareness of their work.
As well as this special collection each artist will be exhibiting the latest of their own paintings. There will also be Giclee prints, and cards for sale.
The artists will be making a donation from the sale of paintings

Amicus member Linda Compton McDonald is currently exhibiting at 'The Gallery at Nymans'. Linda is a member of the Nymans floraligeum society and their exhibition "Drawn from Nature" will run from 8th March to 1st June.
The gallery is open everyday from 10am - 4.30pm ( last entry 30 mins before closing).
Linda has a particular particular interest in trees including the 'Persian Ironwood' shown here. More of Linda's paintings can be seen by going to her page on this website.

Exciting commission from Woburn Abbey for Mary Ellen Taylor

Mary Ellen was thrilled to be approached this spring by Her Grace, the Duchess of Bedford to paint a little known iris ‘Duke of Bedford’.
This tall bearded variety bred specially for the present Duke of Bedford’s grandfather in 1922 has been propagated and grown at Bliss Nurseries thanks to Anne Milner.
Mary Ellen presented the finished watercolour to Her Grace in May which will be used in marketing and as a valuable contribution to the historical archives at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire.
Woburn Abbey plans to propagate the Duke of Bedford iris at Woburn Abbey, display in decorative borders and sell to visitors and Friends to their lovely grounds.

Several members of Amicus Botanicus are taking part in an exhibition entitled 'Mor.phol.o.gy' from 2nd - 28th of July 2013 at the lovely "Sunbury Embroidery Gallery" at Sunbury-on-Thames near London.
This small contemporary Gallery is situated within a beautiful old walled garden in the middle of Sunbury and has a delightful cafe attached to it. It is also close to Hampton Court should you be visiting the flower show."

Double Success

Amicus member Sally Pond can celebrate a double achievement this month. Her series of eight paintings entitled "Social climbers, from Hedgerow to Garden" have earned her a silvergilt medal at this years RHS Exhibition in Vincent Square London.
At the same time one of her paintings was awarded a Certificate of Botanical Merit in the SBA Exhibition in Westminster Central Hall, London.

The Art of Trees at Westonbirt

Three Amicus Botanicus members, Christine Battle, Pearl Bostock, and Linda Compton-McDonald are among a group of botanical artists exhibiting a stunning collection of botanical works featuring trees from Westonbirt Arboretum, Bedgebury Pinetum and elsewhere.
The exhibition opens at Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire on Wednesday 27th of March and runs until Tuesday 2nd of April.

Naturalist at Work

Amicus member Jeanne Debons has been asked to illustrate the cover of a second book by the author Jack Nisbet. The first book by the same author and publisher, Sasquatch books, was called "The Collector" and featured Jeanne's beautiful painting of a pinecone on the cover.
The latest book is titled "David Douglas, a Naturalist at Work" and is a colorfully illustrated collection of essays that examines various aspects of Douglas's career, demonstrating the connections between his work in the Pacific Northwest of the 19th century and the place we know today.
From the Columbia River's perilous bar to luminous blooms of mountain wildflowers; from ever-changing frontiers of technology to the quiet seasonal rhythms of tribal families gathering roots, these essays collapse time to shed light on people and landscapes.
'A hit Down Under'

Amicus member Shirley Slocock has had a recent success in Australia. A painting that she entered for the prestigious Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize at the South Australia Museum in Adelaide, not only won a commendation, but was selected as the image for all the publicity material.
The painting was entitled "Veggiefest" and has won Shirley new fans in Australia. The photograph above shows a friend admiring the huge advert which features Shirley's painting, at the local airport!"
'Butterflies in Chelsea'

As part of their 'Butterflies in the Garden' season Mary Ellen Taylor is exhibiting six beautiful new paintings of butterflies at the Chelsea Physic garden.

Success at the RHS!

Congratulations to a founding member of Amicus Shirley Slocock, on her success at the recent 2012 RHS Botanical Painting show.
Shirley gained a well deserved silver gilt medal for her wonderful series of paintings of palms which stood out as a highlight of the show for their dramatic and inventive design.
